Natal, Brazil: More Than Just a Beautiful City

by Samuel Ferino

Natal is not just my birth city, but also one of the most beautiful cities in Brazil. If you would like to be in a warm place, Natal is your best choice. This city is known as City of Sun or Bride’s Sun, so don’t worry about cold, just enjoy!

Also, don’t be fooled just because Natal means Christmas in English. Natal is often celebrated for its stunning beaches and tropical climate. But beyond its sun-drenched coastline, this vibrant city offers so much more. Whether you’re a history buff, an adventure seeker, or a lover of rich cultural experiences, Natal has something to offer everyone.

Beaches & Adventure

Ponta Negra, one of the most famous beaches, is home to the iconic Morro do Careca (‘Bald Hill’), a towering sand dune. For those seeking quieter shores, Genipabu Beach combines pristine sand with thrilling dune buggy rides, camel tours, and natural lagoons.

For thrill-seekers, Natal offers a variety of outdoor adventures. Whether it’s exploring the nearby Parque das Dunas (Dunes Park), one of the largest urban parks in Brazil, or taking a boat tour along the Potengi River at sunset, there are endless opportunities to experience nature up close. The surrounding region is also home to natural wonders like the Cajueiro de Pirangi, the world’s largest cashew tree, which sprawls over nearly 9,000 square meters.

Gastronomy

Natal’s culinary scene is a delightful fusion of fresh seafood and regional delicacies. Be sure to try the traditional carne de sol (salted beef) paired with macaxeira (cassava) and a side of feijão verde (green beans). Don’t miss out on the city’s incredible shrimp dishes, which are known nationwide. For dessert, cartola (fried bananas with cheese and cinnamon) is a local favorite.

History and Culture

Founded in 25 December 1599, Natal has deep historical roots. The Forte dos Reis Magos, a fortress built by the Portuguese in the shape of a star, stands as a testament to the city’s colonial past. Walking through its corridors, visitors can imagine what life was like centuries ago, defending the coast from invaders.

Natal’s vibrant culture is reflected in its year-round festivals. For example, the São João festival in June brings the spirit of the countryside to the heart of the city with lively quadrilha dances and colorful costumes.
